What is a SIP enterprise session border controller (eSBC)? Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is the communication technology employed to set up and tear down VoIP phone calls..

A session border controller (SBC) is a networking device positioned between networks to provide call setup and teardown (session), network demarcation/separation (border) and other types of management (control) over the data streams that pass through the device. Because the SIP specification allows for variations in implementation, a networking device known as a session border controller (SBC) is typically required at the demarcation point between carrier networks (peer-to-peer) or between the service provider network and the business subscriber LAN. In the latter case the device is called an enterprise session border controller (eSBC)-as distinct from a carrier-class SBC. Installed on the subscriber premises, the eSBC provides several essential networking functions for businesses that connect to an Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP) over a SIP trunk.
