We recently worked with a customer who was trying to decide between the Adtran 908e and the Patton Smartnode 4960.  We could provide either solution, since we are direct with both Patton Electronics and Adtran.    Here is what we discovered in seeking to understand the differences:

The Patton Smartnodes and the Adtran TA series run about the same price.  The Patton Smartnode 4960 is probably the first device to compete against the Adtran 924e on cost.

But the Patton devices  have more features.  There is no gigabit Ethernet present on the Adtran device, and the Total Access series devices don’t support T.38 or VPN, as the Patton devices do. Another interesting observation, made by one of the engineers at Patton is this:

“The Adtran 924e is a design derived from an access router…Adtran will have a long way to go before they have VoIP working as well as in a Patton Smartnode.”
