What is an Ethernet Extender?

Ethernet has a distance limitation of about 100 Meters.  Ethernet Extenders are special devices which overcome this distance limit and enable network segmentsto traverse greater distances.

When copper infrastructure is used, Ethernet Extenders work by converting the Ethernet signals to DSL signaling, then back to Ethernet at the far end. They use different DSL modulation schemes depending on the distance and bandwidth requirements for the application.  Copper Ethernet Extenders will work to distances approaching 6 miles.

Far greater distances and much higher bandwidths can be achieved using Fiber Ethernet Extenders.  But very often, copper infrastructure already exists -- making use of existing copper wiring makes more sense than pulling new fiber optic cable.

Another approach to extending Ethernet to a remote location involves breaking the long segment up into two or more shorter segments. Devices which sit in the middle of the long run, breaking it into two shorter runs are normally called Ethernet Boosters.

We specialize in Ethernet Extenders.  We can discuss your application and help you select the best solution for your particular application.  Call or email us.
