LAN Extenders

Here are a range of Ethernet LAN Extenders that use unconditioned copper wiring to extend a LANs. The LAN Extenders we offer operate over a single twisted pair. Ethernet LAN Extenders use various DSL modulation schemes to transmit information.  Copper-based Ethernet LAN Extenders must be used on unconditioned wire, such as unused twisted pairs and alarm circuits.  Here are the simple, easy to use LAN Extenders we recommend:

Model 2156 CopperLink 2.3-Mbps Ethernet LAN Extenders

  • Extend your network up to 32,000 ft. (9,754 m)

  • 2.3 Mbps extension using existing twisted pair of copper

  • Plug-and-play-No configuration necessary!

Model 2157 CopperLink 4.6-Mbps Ethernet LAN Extenders

  • Auto-rate adaptation gives the highest rate possible for for the extension distance of your network

  • 4.6 Mbps over just a single twisted pair of copper

  • Extension distances up to 32,000 feet (10 km)

  • Auto-sensing 10/100 Ethernet port

Model 2158 CopperLink 12.5-Mbps Ethernet LAN Extenders

  • High-speed full-duplex 12.5 Mbps communications link

  • Extends LAN connections up to 4,500 ft. (1,372 m)

  • Easy 2-wire CopperLink connection via built-in RJ-45 or 2-position terminal block

Model 2168 CopperLink 16.67-Mbps Multi-Rate Ethernet LAN Extenders

  • Low cost/plug and play solution for campus wide network extension and delivery of last-mile ISP services over Ethernet

  • Extends LAN distances up to 1 mile over 2-wire 24 AWG unconditioned lines

  • Switch selectable asymmetrical or symmetrical line rates up to 16.67 Mbps!

  • Auto-sensing 10Base-T or 100Base-TX

LAN Extender Technology

LAN extension is an easy solution to the problems created by the limited range of Ethernet cables. A LAN extension device operates at the physical layer, transparent to higher network-layer protocols. LAN extenders forward all traffic between two LANs.

When the source and the destination of a data transmission are very close to each other, as with components of an integrated circuit, we can achieve very high-speed communication with little or no interference. Unfortunately such an ideal environment for data communications is not always practical. As transmission distance increases, the data-transfer signal becomes increasingly susceptible to interference from noise and distortion.

When a computer must be connected to more than one peripheral device, or to other computers, Ethernet LAN connections are commonly used. Standard Ethernet cabling media, however, have some restrictive distance limitations. Using standard CAT5 cable, the connection between the source and the destination begins to break down at 328 feet. Real-world situations frequently require network connections that exceed this Ethernet distance limitation. For such situations, LAN extension devices can provide a valuable solution.

The particular needs of your network will determine the type of LAN extension equipment you should buy. To learn more about the options available, check out Patton's line of Ethernet LAN extenders

What are Ethernet LAN Extenders?

An Ethernet LAN Extender (also network extender) is any device used to extend an Ethernet segment beyond its normal distance limitation of 100 meters for most common forms of Ethernet.

Ethernet LAN Extenders allow users to drive their Ethernet segments beyond the IEEE 802.3 specifications for distance limitation of 328 feet or 100 meters. Ethernet LAN Extenders drive longer range, high-speed data communication between geographically separated LANs or LAN devices and create very cost effective bridged-Ethernet connections. Ethernet LAN Extenders are typically deployed in commercial, residential, industrial and hospitality access environments.  But they are also in use on farms (to Extend Ethernet to the barn) homes, and businesses.  Ethernet LAN Extenders can be referred to as Network extenders, LAN extenders and Ethernet cable extenders and use a variety of transmission technologies over physical media such as copper or fiber. Extenders use copper wiring 1 pair unconditioned wiring (POTS) up to category rated twisted pair (CAT3...CAT6).  While transmitting over copper wire does not allow for the speeds that fiber-optic transmission does, it allows the use of existing voice-grade copper wiring, and speeds are increasing.

How Are Ethernet LAN Extenders Used?

Ethernet LAN Extenders eliminate the need for installing expensive 802.3 repeaters, twisted pair (CAT5/CAT6) cabling, or fiber and associated fiber transceivers. Ethernet LAN Extenders provide the most cost effective solutions for any LAN extension project, including Wireless Access Point installation, IP Security Camera and POS (Point of Sale) applications. Ethernet LAN Extenders create effective seamless LAN connections across disparate LAN’s in office parks, across streets, around college campuses, joining remote buildings or within large enterprise businesses.

Use existing copper wiring with a huge cost saving over traditional copper and Fiber solutions.
