How Do I Extend Ethernet to a Remote Location?
Since Ethernet has a distance limiation of about 100 Meters, special devices are required if network segments needs to traverse greater distances. Typically this is done using Ethernet Extenders, with a device at each end. That's why Ethernet Extenders are sold in pairs.
When copper infrastructure is used, Ethernet Extenders work by converting the Ethernet signals to DSL signaling, then back to Ethernet at the far end. Copper Ethernet Extenders will work to distances approaching 6 miles. Greater distances can be achieved using Fiber Ethernet Extenders. Another approach to extending Ethernet to a remote location involves breaking the long segment up into two or more shorter segments. Devices which sit in the middle of the long run, breaking it into two shorter runs are normally called Ethernet Boosters.
