How Do I Boost Ethernet?

The most common way to boost Ethernet is to use Ethernet Extenders.  Ethernet has a distance limit of 100 meters, or 328 feet. If your network segment goes beyond that distance, then you will probably have problems maintaining a solid connection.

Ethernet Extenders solve the problem by using two devices, a unit for each end, local and remote.  Units exist which will work to distances as great 6 miles over copper. Most Ethernet Extenders work over a single twisted pair of copper wire in a CAT3, CAT5, or CAT6 cable by converting Ethernet to DSL...then back to Ethernet at the far end. Far greater distances can be covered by Fiber Ethernet Extenders which use fiber optic cable.

Another approach to extending Ethernet to a remote location involves breaking the long segment up into two or more segments. Devices which sit in the middle of the long run, breaking it into two shorter runs are normally called Ethernet Boosters.

This solution is less commonly employed because the Ethernet Booster requires power, which is not normally available in the middle of a long LAN segment.  Some Ethernet Boosters can be powered from a POE switch.
