Ethernet Extenders

What are Ethernet Extenders?

Ethernet Extenders (also network extenders) are used to extend an Ethernet segment beyond its normal distance limitation of 100 meters for most common forms of Ethernet.

Ethernet Extenders that use copper wire include 2- and 4-wire variants using unconditioned copper wiring to extend a LANs. All the Ethernet Extenders we offer on this page operate over a single twisted pair. Ethernet Extenders use various DSL modulation schemes to transmit information.  Copper-based Ethernet extenders must be used on unconditioned wire, such as unused twisted pairs and alarm circuits.

Ethernet Extenders allow users to drive their Ethernet segments beyond the IEEE 802.3 specifications for distance limitation of 328 feet or 100 meters. Ethernet extenders drive longer range, high-speed data communication between geographically separated LANs or LAN devices and create very cost effective bridged-Ethernet connections. Ethernet Extenders are typically deployed in commercial, residential, industrial and hospitality access environments.  But they are also in use on farms (to Extend Ethernet to the barn) homes, and businesses.  Ethernet Extenders can be referred to as Network extenders, LAN extenders and Ethernet cable extenders and use a variety of transmission technologies over physical media such as copper or fiber. Extenders use copper wiring 1 pair unconditioned wiring (POTS) up to category rated twisted pair (CAT3...CAT6).  While transmitting over copper wire does not allow for the speeds that fiber-optic transmission does, it allows the use of existing voice-grade copper wiring, and speeds are increasing.

How Are Ethernet Extenders Used?

Ethernet Extenders eliminate the need for installing expensive 802.3 repeaters, twisted pair (CAT5/CAT6) cabling, or fiber and associated fiber transceivers. Ethernet Extenders provide the most cost effective solutions for any LAN extension project, including Wireless Access Point installation, IP Security Camera and POS (Point of Sale) applications. Ethernet Extenders create effective seamless LAN connections across disparate LAN’s in office parks, across streets, around college campuses, joining remote buildings or within large enterprise businesses.

Use existing copper wiring with a huge cost saving over traditional copper and Fiber solutions.

Ethernet Extension > Ethernet Extenders

Ethernet extenders allow users to expand their Ethernet connections beyond the 328-foot (100-meter) Ethernet distance limitations. Ethernet extenders can establish long-range, high-speed data communication links between geographically separated LANs or LAN devices. Ethernet extenders are often employed to connect workgroups on different floors within a building.

The Benefits of Ethernet Extenders

One benefit of Ethernet extenders is they can eliminate the need for installing expensive Switches and CAT5 cable. Ethernet extenders can use fiber-optic or copper twisted-pair cables to transparently send packets at full-line rate to a peered LAN up to five miles away. While networks typically deploy Ethernet extenders within a limited geographical area, this area need not be limited to one building. Ethernet extenders can create effective bridged-Ethernet connections across streets or over a college or enterprise campus and between Ethernet LANs up to five miles apart.

Ethernet extenders are cost-effective alternatives to more complicated and pricey wiring installations such as CAT5 cable. Ethernet extenders are plug-and-play devices that you can install quickly to take advantage of existing copper twisted-pair network infrastructure. Depending on the required data rate, some Ethernet extender models can increase the distance of an Ethernet link extension beyond five miles.

We offer a wide range of award-winning Ethernet extenders to serve your networking needs, including both copper and fiber models. Our auto-rate adaptation feature ensures the highest speed possible across great distances. Unlike many LAN extenders, Patton extenders with auto-rate adaptation can be set for multiple data rates and require no difficult configuration when connecting to LANs at different distances.
